I graduated the Naval Academy with a degree in Physical Oceanography in 2010, and in 2012 (after some miserable, very low vis dives in San Diego) I started cracking the code on how to predict visibility.
As a current graduate student at UCSD I have had the privilege of talking to many experts at Scripps Institute of Oceanography about this project.
As a freediving instructor for FII, the leader of the Just Get Wet freediving meetup, and an avid surfer/shaper, I have spent a lot of time in the San Diego waters myself. All of this has given me an intimate understanding of what makes the water clear and what makes it murky.
